Healthcare DevOps in action:
our case studies

See the impact of our healthcare DevOps solutions on recent projects, from helping customers pass a SOC 2 Type II audit to running our own RCM platforms in production.

  • Background for

    The Lactation Network, USA

    Audit-ready HIPAA compliance posture

    Cloud-based EMR solution

TLN developed the first EMR tailored to the needs and charting habits of certified lactation consultants. MindK helped the client adopt the AWS Well-Architected Framework and continuous HIPAA compliance practices.

    • Reuse of the modular Terragrunt framework with universal configs to easily create, modify, and reuse infrastructure components.
    • S3 buckets replication with encryption, event logging, and access logging.
    • AWS Backups plans with retention rules for all data resources with rotation and IAM roles.
    • Customer-managed KMS keys with corresponding service role policies.
    • Execution and access logs with KMS keys and appropriate policies.
  • Background for

    GoodBilling, USA

HIPAA-compliant DevOps infrastructure for agentic RCM

    Agentic RCM platform

GoodBilling is MindK’s own product that automates RCM for 300+ USA clinics. Its AI agents facilitate patient intake, eligibility checks, verification of benefits, prior authorization, claims, denials, and appeals. The platform is hosted on a HIPAA-compliant infrastructure from Sprint 1.

    • PHI anonymization service for third-party models
    • Sensitive classification, such as plan-type identification, runs on a model hosted inside the HIPAA-compliant environment.
    • Envelope encryption with AWS KMS, and rotating secrets in AWS Secrets Manager.
    • CloudTrail audit logs and AWS Config drift detection, with GuardDuty, Security Hub, Inspector, and Macie for threat and sensitive-data detection.
    • Distributed tracing with OpenTelemetry and AWS X-Ray.
  • Background for

    USA

Achieving SOC 2 Type II certification

    Multi-tenant SaaS application, USA

A US scale-up needed a SOC 2 Type II certification and ongoing HIPAA compliance to serve some of the country’s top clinics. The key concerns included infrastructure reusability, tenant data isolation, and continuous monitoring. We developed a modular Terragrunt framework and established a measurable, audit-ready posture using Datadog and Vanta:

    • Access control: 100% enforcement of IMDSv2, hardware & virtual MFA, role-based access, no root key usage.
    • Data protection: S3, EC2, RDS, and EBS encryption with AWS KMS; public access blocked across all S3 buckets.
    • IAM hygiene: no wildcard IAM trust policies, admin roles blocked on EC2, stale credentials rotated.
    • Audit & monitoring: VPC flow logs, CloudTrail log encryption, access logging on all critical services.
    • Container security: kubelet TLS auth, root-only config ownership, disabled anonymous kubelet ports.
  • Background for

    BIG Healthcare, Canada

Eliminating 7 days of disruptions affecting users annually

BIG Healthcare provides analytics for Canadian medical organizations. Its legacy monolith couldn’t provide adequate stability during high-load operations. As a result, users could not access the platform for up to 3-5 days in a row. Our DevOps engineers helped the client migrate to microservices on AWS and introduced a new approach based on Terraform/Terragrunt IaC with CI/CD, QA automation, and observability.

    • 0 hours of service downtime during the periods of resource-intensive calculations.
    • 16 hours of Dev work saved a week with serverless autoscaling (AWS Lambda and Aurora DB).
    • Logging, real-time monitoring, error handling, retries, and alerts for automated recovery.
    • Security and compliance: MFA with AWS Cognito, encryption, secure API access, secret management, and automated dependency management.
  • Background for

    HLTH Rate, USA

A pipeline for 20+ TB of pricing files with no idle database cost

    Payer transparency platform

Payers must publish accurate pricing details by law. However, few patients can analyze thousands of MRF files with a complex nested structure and gigabytes of heterogeneous data. Our healthcare DevOps company has built a pipeline that ingests and normalizes these files, making the pricing data searchable for regular users.

    • Streaming ingestion with JSON boundary detection handles files 10–100x larger than available RAM.
    • Quality gates at each pipeline stage, with logging and alerting throughout.
    • Apache Parquet on partitioned S3 cuts storage costs by up to 90%.
    • AWS Athena scans only the partitions a query needs, so there is no always-on database to pay for.

    Healthcare DevOps challenges we solve

Enterprise deal waiting on a security review

A health system or payer won’t sign until its security team sees proof: encryption, access reviews, audit logs, tested restores, an incident response plan. We map each question to a control, fix what’s missing in infrastructure code, and pull the evidence from your pipelines and logs.

    01

Every questionnaire answer backed by evidence

Shipping AI features that touch PHI

Security won’t approve the LLM feature until someone shows where PHI goes: prompts, responses, logs, vector stores, model endpoints. We put an anonymizer service between PHI and third-party models and host models inside your HIPAA environment for sensitive tasks.

    01

LLM that your security can approve

    Scaling past vibe-coded MVP

A fast-built product works until auditors find secrets in the repo or weak tenant isolation. MindK helps you discover these gaps, ranked by audit risk. Then we move infrastructure into Terraform, place secrets into a secrets manager, add tenant isolation and CI gates, and right-size cloud spend in the same pass.

    01

    Enterprise-ready infrastructure and code

SOC 2 Type II or HITRUST audit on a deadline

The observation window has started with half the compliance tests still failing, and every engineer on controls is one fewer on the roadmap. We fix failing controls in Terraform so they stay fixed, then set up continuous monitoring so evidence builds up on its own.

    How we work

At MindK, DevOps consulting for healthcare teams starts with a free, nonbinding call. We then plan backward from your deadline, whether it's a contract signature or the end of an audit window.

    Intro consultation + NDA

In a 90-minute session, we explore your product goals, constraints, SLAs/OLAs, and compliance scope. We also note the date you're working against. Our companies sign a mutual NDA, confirm BAA needs, and agree on the lightest read‑only access to existing artifacts.

What you get: preliminary risk register, pilot hypothesis with success metrics; access & artifact checklist.

    01

    Discovery

With read‑only access, we map your state across five lenses: cloud/network, CI/CD, runtime, observability/SRE, and compliance/cost (PHI flows, evidence, tagging, ownership, unit cost). AI captures sessions and structures findings, so engineers spend discovery time inside your systems. Our healthcare DevOps consulting team then ranks findings by impact, effort, and audit risk.

What you get: DevOps roadmap, HIPAA/SOC 2 control matrix, DORA metrics baseline, disaster recovery report, savings opportunities.

    02

    Pilot & hardening

Our team implements a single, high‑impact service (such as a patient onboarding API, claims submission pipeline, or a scheduling service) end-to-end. With repeatable IaC, gated CI/CD, GitOps, observability, SLOs, and disaster recovery, we prove measurable gains on real traffic. Agents generate the IaC, pipelines, and tests; engineers validate every decision before it reaches production.

What you get: a production‑ready pilot service, versioned Terraform module, Argo CD app with rollback plan, CI pipelines, cost guardrails.

    03

    Scale‑out

We turn pilot patterns into a reusable platform. We ship a platform repo with Terraform module/catalog and CI templates, define org‑wide policies, centralize secrets/registries, and standardize GitOps governance.

What you get: repository with a module/template catalog, governance/policy docs, migration plan, an adoption dashboard, runbook library.

    04

    Operation and support

Medical DevOps engineers run an SRE cadence with weekly reviews, enforce error budgets, and continuously tune alerts. AI-assisted monitoring flags anomalies as they appear, ahead of the weekly review. We continuously produce audit evidence, support auditors, and optimize spend.

What you get: monthly ops report, refreshed evidence pack ready for audits, quarterly DR test reports, cost optimization summary.

    HIPAA controls and audit evidence

Explore the controls we implement for HIPAA‑covered workloads and the audit evidence you can expect from MindK.

    BAA and PHI boundaries

We sign a BAA and confine PHI to production systems. Non‑production uses de‑identified or synthetic data enforced by CI checks and least‑privilege IAM.

Risk analysis as a discovery deliverable

Risk analysis is the deficiency OCR cites most often, and buyer questionnaires ask for it by name. Discovery produces one, scoped to your PHI flows and infrastructure.

    Immutable logging and retention

The team maintains an immutable audit trail with centralized logging (WORM/immutability). They also sign build artifacts with recorded provenance.

    Change control with approvals

MindK embeds approval steps into CI/CD. Every regulated change has a tamper‑evident history.

    Data‑handling safeguards

Our DevOps experts apply field‑level masking/tokenization and deterministic tokens for identifiers. Role‑based access is reviewed on a fixed cadence.

    Disaster‑recovery proof

We test RTO/RPO targets, run scheduled backup/restore drills, and retain drill logs with pass/fail criteria and timestamps.

    Proposed HIPAA Security Rule readiness

The proposal would require ePHI encryption at rest and in transit, MFA on systems that access ePHI, annual penetration testing, and closer oversight of business associates. Most of it is already in our standard control set, so we build to the current rule and design for the proposed one.

      Complementary services

When an audit finding lands in the application code, the same team fixes it without a handoff between vendors.

      Healthcare software modernization

We refactor brittle monoliths into service‑oriented, cloud‑ready components using patterns like strangler‑fig, domain‑driven design, and feature flags. AI agents read the codebase, map the architecture, and run the migration in stages. The work includes dependency audits, data‑migration runbooks, and blue/green cutovers. The goal is to minimize downtime while keeping PHI within approved boundaries and preserving validation documentation.

      Interoperability & API integrations

Make data easily available across the health care ecosystem. We design, secure, and operate integrations across HL7 v2, FHIR R4/US Core, and payer EDI (e.g., 837/835) with idempotent messaging, retries, and dead‑letter queues. Deliverables include mapping specs, terminology bindings, consent/audit hooks, and traceable API gateway policies with least‑privilege access.

      Test automation for regulated releases

Establish a layered test strategy backed by synthetic PHI, including unit, contract, end‑to‑end, performance, and security testing. Each requirement links to tests in a traceability matrix, CI gates enforce coverage and quality thresholds, and reports are packaged as audit evidence.

      Cloud and reverse migration

We plan and execute phased moves to AWS/Azure using landing zones, network segmentation, and workload‑by‑workload cutovers. MindK can also build a governed lake/warehouse with de‑identification pipelines, lineage, and RBAC so analytics teams can move fast without risking compliance.

        FAQ

        • A health system sent us a security questionnaire. Can you help?

Yes. We map each question to a control, close the gaps in your infrastructure, and collect the evidence your answers point to.

        • Our MVP was built fast, partly with AI coding tools. Do we need a rewrite before SOC 2?

Usually not. The audit shows which parts would fail a review. We harden those in place and rebuild only what can’t be fixed where it stands, such as a data model with no tenant boundary.

        • Do you sign a BAA and scope HIPAA correctly?

Yes. We scope PHI data flows, sign a BAA, and enforce technical safeguards such as access control, encryption, and audit controls. The team also captures verifiable evidence in pipelines and logs.

        • How fast can we see the value?

In the first sprint after discovery, we target a pilot service with IaC module, gated CI, and baseline observability. This will demonstrate measurable lead time/error rate improvements.

        • Do your AI tools ever see our PHI?

AI coding agents work on infrastructure code, pipeline definitions, and de-identified data, with no access to production PHI. For AI features in your product, we place an anonymizer service between PHI and third-party models and host models inside your HIPAA environment for sensitive tasks. The same setup runs in production today.

        • Will you replace our tools?

If current tools meet requirements, we standardize and harden them. If they block compliance or scale, MindK suggests phased migrations with rollback plans and clear ROI.

        • Can you work on‑prem or hybrid?

Absolutely. We can deploy on‑prem GitLab/registries and private runners, and connect them to cloud landing zones over private links. All actions are logged to maintain a full audit trail.

        • How do you keep PHI out of non‑prod?

MindK uses de‑identification or synthetic data, apply masking and tokenization to all non‑production datasets. CI checks prevent PHI artifacts from entering builds, and non‑prod IAM cannot access production secrets.

        • How do you collect change control evidence?

We manage infrastructure as code and sign artifacts with an SBOM and provenance. Regulated changes include recorded approvals. Every step is recorded in tamper‑evident logs mapped to control families.

        • Can you help us prepare for the proposed HIPAA Security Rule changes?

Yes. The proposed rule is not final; OMB currently targets July 2027 for final action. Its main requirements, including encryption of ePHI at rest and in transit, MFA on systems that access ePHI, and annual penetration testing, map onto controls we already implement. Discovery shows where your environment falls short of both the current and the proposed rule.
